Description
Experience the meditative art of the pottery wheel in a focused, semi-private studio setting. Whether you have always wanted to try your hand at the wheel or you tried it once and are ready to give it another go, this course is designed for you. Led by Heidi Graf—a professional ceramic artist with a unique background as a special effects prop builder for film and television—the class guides participants through the fundamental pillars of wheel throwing: centering, opening, and pulling. Under Heidi’s expert guidance, you will transform raw clay into functional, everyday vessels such as small pots, mugs, and bowls. We will cover all stages of production, from initial wedging and centering to the technical arts of trimming and finishing. This supportive, small-group environment ensures that every student receives personalized, step-by-step instruction tailored to their experience level. All completed pieces will be twice-fired, rendering them fully functional, microwave, and dishwasher-safe.

This mini session is the perfect space to build your confidence from scratch, or rebuild your rhythm.
*Materials & Tools*
One block of clay is included with registration (additional clay is available for purchase on-site). All basic studio tools will be provided and available for student use throughout the course.

Heidi Graf
Heidi Graf is a Pickering-based potter and educator who believes that every student brings a unique perspective to the studio. A member of the Durham Potters Guild, Heidi’s creative background is as diverse as her work; she brings years of experience as a special effects prop builder for film and television, a professional in restaurant management, and a mother. These roles have shaped her into a patient, high-energy mentor who values technical “movie-magic” precision alongside the joy of “playing with mud.”
Specializing in functional forms and expert glazing, Heidi’s teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that everyone has something to teach. This June at Artbarn School, she invites students of all levels to master the wheel and hand building in a supportive environment where community and creativity go hand-in-hand.
