“This class exceeded my expectations! I had never taken a watercolour class before, as this medium seems intimidating to me – Barb was amazing! The class environment was inclusive and warm, with lots of instruction and opportunity to practice watercolour techniques. I would recommend this class to anyone wanting to try watercolour! I will be back for more sessions.”
This Autumn, we will be exploring Portugal! “Travelling ” from north to south, we will do some urban sketches in Porto, practice wet on wet painting in Obidos to capture the lush bougainvillea, and sit on a beach in the Algarve- painting the rocks and waves. As always, there will be a contour drawing to calm and centre you at the beginning of each session; tied in to the place you are “visiting”. Barb will e-mail you the sketch for the first painting the week before – you can print it, copy it, or trace it. Pack up your painting supplies and your curiosity and sense of adventure – no passport needed !
Zoom login ID and password will be provided through email and sent out each week before class.

Barbara Hotson (Honours BA, MA) lives and paints at Applegate Farm near Walters Falls. She has been painting exclusively in Watercolour for twenty years. Endlessly intrigued and challenged by the interaction of water and pigment on paper or watercolour canvas she has resisted the sirens’ call to experiment in other mediums.
She early on gravitated to painting in series and developed a sub- text for each. Her Country Roads Series depicts the landscapes of Southwestern Ontario; the culture and heritage they represent. The Beaches Series celebrates her love the water and the magic of sand and sun.; how the image of a beach brings out the child in all of us. The Gates Series is about the Transitions in our lives; how we don’t get to see what is on the other side until we pass through the gate.
Barb participates in the Autumn Leaves Studio Tour, The Escarpment Tour and teaches at Artbarn School in Toronto. Her work has been described as “magical and luminous” and her students describe her teaching as “opening our eyes to possibilities”. She enjoys doing commissions and working with a client to create something unique and special.
