Description

This Fall, through the magic of Watercolour, we will travel to the wondrous city of Rome!

You are welcome to sign up for all six sessions or just Part I or II as your schedule permits.

Part I Sept 12, Sept 19, Sept 26

Part II Oct 17, Oct 24, Oct 31

In our first 3 week session in September we will be painting the “Fountain of the Boat” at the foot of the Spanish Steps. Then in October after a short break, we’ll explore the smaller public fountains that run continuously with cool clear drinking water on every other corner of Rome. Rome has over two thousand public drinking fountains and the cleanest best tasting water is constantly flowing from them. We will paint one and imagine ourselves resting in the shade with a cool drink of water. Barb endeavours to put painters right in a place . . . sitting on the edge of a fountain on a gorgeous Autumn afternoon, feeling the sun, hearing the music of the water and soaking it all in.

As always, there will be a contour drawing at the beginning of each class to warm up your brain and stimulate creativity; relating to the place you are “visiting”. You will be emailed the sketch for each class painting the week before – you can print it, copy it, or trace it. Pack up your painting supplies, your curiosity and your sense of adventure – no passport needed! In addition to the travel painting there will be time for and assistance with personal projects.

Please note this is an online class. Zoom classroom link and password will be provided through email.

“This class exceeded my expectations! I had never taken a watercolour class before, as this medium seems intimidating to me – Barb was amazing! The class environment was inclusive and warm, with lots of instruction and opportunity to practice watercolour techniques. I would recommend this class to anyone wanting to try watercolour! I will be back for more sessions.”

Barbara Hotson

Barbara Hotson (Honours BA, MA) lives and paints at Applegate Farm near Walters Falls. She has been painting exclusively in Watercolour for twenty years. Endlessly intrigued and challenged by the interaction of water and pigment on paper or watercolour canvas she has resisted the sirens’ call to experiment in other mediums.

She early on gravitated to painting in series and developed a sub- text for each. Her Country Roads Series depicts the landscapes of Southwestern Ontario; the culture and heritage they represent. The Beaches Series celebrates her love the water and the magic of sand and sun.; how the image of a beach brings out the child in all of us. The Gates Series is about the Transitions in our lives; how we don’t get to see what is on the other side until we pass through the gate.

Barb participates in the Autumn Leaves Studio Tour, The Escarpment Tour and teaches at Artbarn School in Toronto. Her work has been described as “magical and luminous” and her students describe her teaching as “opening our eyes to possibilities”. She enjoys doing commissions and working with a client to create something unique and special.
